- LYMPHEDEMA – This chronic condition is characterized by an abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the interstitium, which causes chronic inflammation and reactive fibrosis of affected tissues. Most often it affects the extremities though can occur elsewhere (e.g. head, neck); may be Primary (present at birth) or Secondary (result of surgery or radiation therapy). MLD helps manage lymphedema by re-routing the flow of lymph around blocked or compromised areas into more centrally located, healthy lymph vessels, which then drain into the venous system.
- POST-TRAUMATIC AND POST-SURGICAL EDEMA – Whether you’ve sprained an ankle or had a knee replacement surgery, these conditions respond favorably to MLD to relieve pain, decrease initial swelling, facilitate healthy scar formation and healing, and restore normal range of motion (ROM). Generally it is recommended to wait at least 48 hours after an acute injury and longer after surgical intervention to receive MLD.
- ONCOLOGY RECOVERY – In conjunction with proper medical care, MLD can support post-surgical recovery, pain control, edema reduction, infection prevention, neuropathy, hematoma reduction, constipation relief, relaxation, stress reduction and improved sleep. Clients seeking help along their oncology recovery journey should always consult their healthcare provider(s) before beginning MLD treatments and to stay current with lab/test results to ensure optimal treatment protocol.
- AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS – Conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome all respond favorably to MLD and clients will see benefits such as reduced pain/hypersensitivity, improved restful sleep and nervous system calm, and reduced severity of flare-ups.
- NEUROPATHY – Individuals living with neurological conditions such as neuropathy, in which nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord are damaged, can benefit from MLD massage as it aids in managing symptoms (e.g. pain, tingling, hypersensitivity to touch) through calming touch, improving tissue health and reducing hypersensitivity.
